Collaboration Gift for Aid / UCOTA
Travelling is submerging in other cultures and a fact
is that tourism and local communities are inseparably united. Therefore
Great Lakes Safaris, Gift for Aid and UCOTA have joined hands to
improve the livelihood of the communities together. Because Christmas
is not for everyone a time of abundant dinners and joyful reunions
with family and friends...
Gift for
Aid International is a charity organisation that gives tourists
and travellers the opportunity to contribute to the structural improvement
of lives of people. They present small-scale development projects,
initiatied and implemented by the local community and lodges. Travellers
from all over the world can get involved and help the communities
to help themselves!
The Uganda
Community Tourism Association (UCOTA)
exists to develop local communities through the scale of handcrafts
and the provision of accommodation, guiding and cultural performances.
With the revenues from these activities important community projects
are supported, including clinics and schools.
Great Lakes
Safaris offers you the chance to combine your holiday with a visit
to one of these projects. A sample is the Bigodi Water Project that
helps to provide clean and safe drinking water for the Bigodi community.
Our recent collaboration
will be celebrated at the Vakantiebeurs 2007 in Utrecht, where we
will not only join hands but share stands as well.

Highlights of 2006
Although still a few more days are left, we can look back
at a succesful year, full of safaris, pleasant communication and
happy clients. For those who haven't had the luck yet to visit this
beautiful country, we hope to welcome you in 2007!
Our great
highlights of 2006 are:
New office
In June we moved to a modern, spacious office at Susie House, from
where our office team is devoted to assist you in preparing your
Uganda safari.
New collaborations
During this year several collaborations were initiated in order
to develop Uganda into an even more appealing tourist destination.
Besides our pleasant cooperation with the Kabateraine family, who
run the ultime cultural place called Nshenyi Village, we also started
working with Gift for Aid and UCOTA. And recently we joined with
several communities in the Rwenzoris region to start a new ecotourism
project. We are very grateful for the commitment of everyone and
are looking forward to continue these promising collaborations in
2007!
New guides
In the course of the year a number of driver/guides strenghtened
the Great Lakes team. Some you have already met by our former newsletters,
others will introduce themselves in the year to come. But all of
them did an excellent job in guiding our clients on their exploration
tour through Uganda. Special thanks to Beki, Noel, David, Gerald
and Cosmas!
New safari lodge
The highlight of the highlights! We are very grateful for winning
the concession that was awarded by UWA, giving us the chance to
start our own lodge in the middle of Kibale Forest National Park.
Although the original bandas are still available, we will start
the construction of the new safari accommodation in January 2007.
We are looking forward to welcome you at Primate Lodge Kibale!
Each member
of the team has dedicated 2007 to serve you in any way they can
and make it a fantastic safari year!

Testimonial
Ingus from Latvia travelled with
us in October 2006. This is what he says about his safari:
"Thank
you VERY MUCH for putting a wonderful itinerary together! This certainly
was the best trip we ever had so far! People all over were very
wonderful and the nature was beautiful! Visits to various parks
were very nice and some parts really surprised us - I
never imagined to get that close to hyenas and hippos on foot like
we did in Lake Mburo National Park. The
chimp walks were very good; even reading a lot about the gorillas
didn't really get our imagination how great the experience would
be... Honestly we can say good things for each park where we've
been and each one gave something unique as well - not repeating
same thing as in some other countries where we've been. Rafting
was also a great experience for me!
Thanks to the Great Lakes staff who put this trip together and special
thanks to our driver Cosmas who did everything what we requested
and was a really good guide and driver all the way long! We are
really considering coming back to this region and Uganda at some
point in the future..."
